St. Francis of Assisi – “The Joyful Beggar,” aptly named by Louis de Wohl. His wonder and awe for the peaks of poverty reflected his reverence for the Consecrated Host: “O admirable height and stupendous condescension! O humble sublimity! O sublime humility! that the Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God, so humbles Himself that for our salvation He hides Himself under a morsel of bread.” At the foundation of all the sweet stories one hears of St. Francis and under the darling devotions of many toward Him, there lies a mountain of character too bold to paint and a crash of charisma too thunderous to sing. St. Bonaventure trembled in holy fear when speaking of him, “For Francis, even as the morning star in the midst of a cloud, shining with the bright beams of his life and teaching, by his dazzling radiance, led into the light, them that sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, and, like unto the rainbow giving light in the bright clouds, set forth in himself the seal of the Lord’s covenant.” Upon receiving the wounds of the Lord, the stigmata, Our Lord spoke to St. Francis and explained, “I have given you my wounds as signs of my Passion, so that you are to be my standard bearer. And, as on the day of my death I went to Limbo, and all of the souls that I found there entered into Heaven by virtue of these Stigmata of mine. And like that, I concede to you each year on the day of your death, you will go to purgatory and all of the souls from your three Orders and of the others very much devoted to you, those whom you will find, you can take with you in virtue of your Stigmata and transport them to the glory of Paradise. You are to resemble me in life and in death.”
