Annunciation

The Annunciation – Fiat – “Let it be to me according to your word.”  My Lady, My Mother, open my ears while you sing your hymn of courage, a hymn that has one word and one meaning, universal and strong.  Let your song overshadow my beating heart, that in the silence of my impending destiny, may the walls of my selfishness be cast down and shattered, and your voice, so melodious and pure, echo in my soul now belonging to you forever.  Yes!

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”  And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?”  And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.  And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.  For with God nothing will be impossible.”  And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”  And the angel departed from her.  Luke 1:31-38

In his encyclical Redemptoris Mater, “Mother of the Redeemer,” Pope John Paul II writes, “as the (Second Vatican) Council teaches, “‘The obedience of faith’ (Rom. 16:26; cf. Rom. 1:5; 2 Cor. 10:5-6) must be given to God who reveals, an obedience by which man entrusts his whole self freely to God.”  This description of faith found perfect realization in Mary. The “decisive” moment was the Annunciation, and the very words of Elizabeth: “And blessed is she who believed” refer primarily to that very moment.”
